Dental Life Time Wellness Plans
Periodontal disease is a serious
issue found in 85% of pets four years and older. If left untreated, your pet can suffer from ill-effects
such as: inflamed and painful gums, bad breath, bone loss, loose teeth, and
other infections that can spread all over their bodies.
While non-anesthetic cleanings are
gaining popularity, they require forcibly holding your pet down, in order to
scrape their teeth only on the outer surface.
At West Ridge Animal Hospital we offer a different and better
alternative by following the American Animal Hospital Association’s recommended
procedure. Your pet will be anesthetized and we will take Dental Radiographs
which are just as important for our pets as when you visit the dentist. Anesthesia also eliminates the possibility of
pain during a dental procedure, allowing for a much more thorough cleaning of
the mouth, including subgingival scaling, and exa
mination of the surfaces of
the teeth facing the tongue.
Very few veterinary hospitals in
the area provide this level of care in their dental procedures. Complying with
AAHA standards also means advanced monitoring of your pet while under
anesthesia. This includes: blood
pressure monitoring, carbon dioxide and oxygen levels, and a constant EKG
tracing or monitoring of the heart. Placing an intravenous catheter and
providing fluids during the procedure are essential to the safety of your pet.
This allows us the ability to treat low blood pressure, to administer drugs
immediately intravenously, and to aid in the rapid removal of the anesthetic
medications from the body if needed.
