Does your dog jump up on the counter? Read this!

To dogs, certain smells and tastes can be downright irresistible. This often creates challenges for owners, as their pets may insist on getting to said temptations; even if they are up on counters, or in other restricted areas. We wish we could give you a “one size fits all” solution but the truth is, all dogs are unique and require different approaches. Depending on your pup and his/her temperament, sensitivity, and size, you may try some of the following ideas:

- One option would be to do on-leash training by placing treats on the counter, rewarding when the treats are ignored and correcting when the dog jumps up. This, of course, will likely require a good length of time before the behavior is resolved, so be sure to stick to it.
- Many dogs will respond when their paws hit double-sided sticky tape on the counter, making this definitely worth trying! However, some dogs just aren’t going to be sensitive to that and will require more.
- You can also purchase a Scat Mat at your local pet supply store. These will produce a small, harmless shock to the dog’s paws, startling them and teaching them to avoid that area.

Of course, one other option is to schedule your pet for some behavior modification training. We highly recommend Mandy Stickle, who trains at Sirius Fun Doggy Daycare. She can be reached at 970-402-4606.
