Leptospirosis on the Rise?
In response to a KCNC CBS4 News story about Leptospirosis cases in Denver rising, the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) queried its members about Leptospirosis infection. Despite being in a potentially high risk area, West Ridge Animal Hospital has not had any confirmed leptospirosis cases. Weld County's agriculture, with its dairy cows and irrigated land; and abundant wildlife are contributing factors to increased Leptospirosis risk. We have seen and tested many suspect animals, but have not treated any confirmed cases. The Overall risk has not risen, but localized situations and behaviors increase the hazard to your pet. Your Leptospirosis risk factors vary on a case by case basis. If you are concerned about Leptospirosis, West Ridge can offer a vaccine after completion of a risk assessment with your veterinarian.
From the CVMA News alert:
Veterinarians report Leptospirosis cases remain steady
The Colorado Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) has followed the story about Leptospirosis that aired on CBS 4 last night. CVMA contacted a number of veterinarians throughout Colorado in an effort to assess the number of cases of this serious bacterial disease being seen in veterinary clinics. Veterinarians are reporting the number of cases seen over the past 2 years has remained relatively steady without any sudden increase in current incidences of the disease.
While Leptospirosis is a serious disease, it is not new and there are very effective treatments. If diagnosed and treated promptly, Leptospirosis can usually be cured. Animal owners are encouraged to consult with their veterinarians with questions about the appropriateness of Leptospirosis vaccination.
The Weld County Veterinary Medical Association will be discussing this topic and surveying its members at its meeting next week. We will inform you of their findings.
