Food drive aims to keep furry friends with owners

DENVER - Odie is more than a pet. The black German Labrador provides companionship, security and independence for his owner. He has been Bianca Gamel's guide dog for almost five years. She is blind.

"It's a lot easier to get around with him than with my cane and I always feel like I have someone around who I can talk to," Gamel said.

This last year she has often worried about how she will keep taking care of her dog. Food and medicine for him cost about $100 a month.

It's a huge portion of Gamel's fixed monthly income of $674.

"It's been very difficult. There have been times I just didn't know how I was going to feed him," Gamel said. "I have to do whatever I can to make sure I can take care of him because he takes care of me. I can't lose him." Read more...
