Skunk rabies a concern on Eastern Plains
DENVER – State health workers are warning that skunk rabies has become widespread in eastern Colorado.
The Colorado Health Department says so far this year, 11 skunks have tested positive for rabies: three from Kiowa County, two each in Arapahoe, Baca and Yuma Counties, and one each in Cheyenne and Kit Carson Counties.
There also have been spillover infections in other animals, including a cat and a raccoon.
The state epidemiologist says having pets vaccinated is the simplest and most effective way to protect them and family members.
Also, thirteen cases of rabies in bats have been confirmed this year.
Though there have been no reported cases of skunk rabies in Weld County, it is only a matter of time before we start to see infections reported in our area. as the state epidemiologist states, the best preventative measure is to make sure your companions are up to date on their vaccinations.
