Ask A Vet- Blood in Urine
Q: I saw blood in my cat's urine. Is this as scary as it looks?
A: Blood in your cat's urine is definitely a reason to see your veterinarian. If your cat is male, you should get in to see a veterinarian that day. Also, bring in a fresh urine sample, if at all possible (if you can't, don't worry- your veterinarian can obtain one while you're in). If you visit West Ridge Animal Hospital, your cat will receive a full examination as well as a urinalysis. Depending on what is found at your visit, your cat may or may not receive additional testing and medications to go home.
Most commonly, blood in a cat's urine is due to infection or cystitis (sterile) which is associated with something called "FUS" (Feline Urologic Syndrome). But other causes like tumors are possible. Usually cats that have infections and/or cystitis will spend extended time in the box. Or, they may stop using the box all together which is why the owner notices the blood, it's on the bedspread etc...
